The Corban Festival is celebrated by all ten Islamic ethnic groups. It is called "Eid. Corban" or "Eid-ul-Adha" in Arabic. "Eid" means festival, while "Corban" and "Adha" mean "slaughtering and offering animals in sacrifice".
Corban is an important festival for Muslims. It is a festival of faith and obedience. And on international calendar the festival comes on 10th October. The festival comes 70 days after the Feast of the Fast Breaking, or the tenth day of the second month in the Islamic calendar. The festival bears the meaning that disciples will devote everything to show their obedience and faith to Allah.
In the festival, Muslims gather at major mosques and other public places and have grand ceremonies and celebrations. They prepare livestock beforehand, the livestock should be healthy camels, oxen or sheep, and the choice depends on one's financial condition. The meat will be separated into three parts. One part is for the family itself, one for relatives and friends and the rest part for charity.
The Corban Festival is a traditional festival celebrated by over ten ethnic minorities in China including Uyghur ethnic group. Also known as "Sacrifice Festival" or "Al Adha Feast", the Corban Festival is named with the Festival of Fast-breaking and Mawlid al-Nabi as one of the three major Islamic festivals. During the festival, people will take part in community worship to pilgrimage to Allah, and also, slay livestock and offer sacrifice to Allah, to whom they are desired to get closer.
Before the festival, every family is busy in cleaning house, making festival pastry, and preparing for livestock to be slaughtered. Breed of livestock varies with the financial conditions of every family, with sheep, cattle, camel and chicken as the common choice.
This festival owes its origins to the religious legends of ancient Arabia. It is believed that Ibrahim, the great ancestor of many Arabs in the north, had a dream in which Allah suggested he offer his son as a sacrifice to show the extent of his piety. At the very moment when Ibrahim with knife upheld was just about to kill his son as a sacrifice to God, Allah intervened, satisfied with the faith of Ibrahim, and ordered him to sacrifice a lamb instead. From this story has evolved the Islamic custom of slaughtering and offering domestic animals in sacrifice. After Islam was founded in the seventh century by Mohammed, this ceremony was adopted as part of Islamic practice; the Corban Festival also evolved into one of their most important religious festivals.
